Recent Advances in Gastrointestinal Cancers

Oncologist Ursina Teitelbaum, MD, of the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine presents updates in the management of the GI cancers as revealed at ASCO 2017. This year, Dr. Teitelbaum examines recent findings in stage 3 colon cancer from the IDEA and CALB 89803 studies, and in cholangiocarcinoma from the BILCAP trial.  Finding no practice-changing revelations from the IDEA trial, Dr. Teitelbaum is encouraged by CALB 89803, which suggested that the addition of small servings (two 1 oz servings/wk)  of tree nuts to the diet decreased recurrence in patients with stage 3 colon cancer and BILCAP, an examination of relapse-free survival in patients with resected biliary tract cancer receiving capecitabine vs. observation that found improvement in overall survival among treated patients.
