Fluorescent-Guided Brain Tumor Resection

John Y.K. Lee, MD, discusses recent discoveries at Penn Medicine in the use of indocyanine green (ICG) in neurosurgery for brain tumor visualization. Crediting the work of thoracic surgeon Sunil Singhal, MD, at Penn, Dr. Lee describes the permeable endothelial cell junctions of tumors that make them particularly vulnerable to visualization by fluorescent dyes, then presents a case report in which the dyes reveal remnant tissue following surgical resection of a meningioma.
