I loved anatomy and now in the operating room I get to use that knowledge and passion to immediately and definitively treat a patient's problem. My name is eric Kopecky and I'm a colorectal surgeon at Penn medicine. So my approach to care is to empower each patient with the medical knowledge and treatment options in order for him or her to make the best decision for themselves. I view us as true partners in their care where my first job is to listen and then to educate the majority of conditions that I treat require multidisciplinary care. My patients have access to cutting edge facilities and instruments, the ability to participate in research as well as clinical trials. I typically see patients with general colorectal conditions such as an erectile disease like hemorrhoids or anal fissures, inflammatory bowel disease like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease and colorectal cancer. I know that no one wants to see a colorectal surgeon unless they absolutely have to. And oftentimes patients say they're embarrassed to talk about their symptoms or have a lot of anxiety about what a visit may entail. We aim to make them as comfortable and confident during the process as possible. I think that life is complex and a patient is more than their diagnosis, so it's our job to navigate a patient through their care in order to get them back to who they are and what's truly important.
