Repair versus Replacement in Mitral Valve Surgery – W. Clark Hargrove, III, MD

To treat mitral valve regurgitation, Penn Heart & Vascular surgeons often pursue the path less taken—mitral valve repair—rather than valve replacement, despite the increased complexity and difficulty of these surgeries. Mitral valve repair has been shown to have better long-term outcomes for patients with both mitral regurgitation and mitral stenosis.
