Hot Topics in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Plastic surgeon Paris D. Butler, MD, MPH talks to Matt Birnholz, MD, of ReachMD about breast reconstruction options following mastectomy for breast cancer patients at Updates for the PCP, a Penn Medicine-sponsored event. Dr. Butler stresses the importance of consulting a reconstructive plastic surgeon soon after being diagnosed with breast cancer as this allows the surgeon to be an integral part of the patients cancer treatment team.  Dr. Butler discusses that breast reconstruction can be performed either at the time of mastectomy or at some point after the initial mastectomy is completed.  He also discusses the practical and aesthetic advantages of breast reconstruction including nipple-sparing surgery.
