Emergency Room Management of Acute Aortic Syndromes

John C. Greenwood, MD, examines the emergent management of patients with acute aortic syndromes, a triad consisting of penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer, aortic intramural hematoma and aortic dissection. Dr. Greenwood’s discussion offers initial goals for the patient with aortic emergency, including appropriate analgesia; heart rate and systolic blood pressure control; and a series of case studies wherein he examines the pearls and pitfalls of emergent aortic care.
