I feel like I am in the right place doing what I am meant to be doing and that it is my calling for lack of a better word to be able to use my medical training to help breast cancer patients. My name is Rebecca Fishman. I'm a breast surgeon in the department of Surgery at Penn Medicine. I love being a breast surgeon because breast surgery is a really optimistic field. Breast cancer today is unquestionably treatable and it is extremely curable. My patients become my friends, my family, these are people who I get to know, I meet them when they are at a very vulnerable time in their life. I talk about breast surgery and breast cancer all day every day, but my patients come to me and this is the first time that they are thinking about this in relation to themselves. I know that they are scared, I know that they are putting a lot of trust in me and that develops a really strong relationship. Breast cancer care is all about the patient as a whole. And there is a huge emotional and psychological component to um breast cancer care and this to me is not a burden. This is what I do and why I love doing what I do. I love being able to help women and support them throughout their time with their diagnosis, as well as solve their problem with a surgical approach. Published April 27, 2021 Created by
