Anesthetic & ICU Care Distal Aortic Surgery

In presenting the role of anesthesiology in distal aortic surgery and TAAA repair, anesthesiologist Bonnie L. Milas, MD, considers the risks of neural and vascular ischemia at the spinal cord during and after surgery, and the procedures, devices and monitoring measures employed to allay these risks. Dr. Milas also provides an overview of the post-procedural heart and vascular intensive care unit protocol, first, for transition of care at Penn Medicine, with its focus on communication and efficient and comprehensive resumption of risk management, as well as continuing efforts to avoid postoperative paraplegia, lower extremity changes and new-onset neural deficits.
