Complex Hernia Repair | Hernia Program at Penn Medicine

John P. Fischer, MD, Plastic Surgeon and Co-Director of Penn Medicine’s Hernia Program describes a complex case treating a patient experiencing large lower abdominal hernia recurrence, post-colectomy.

“When he first came in to see me, we spent significant time going through his history and also obtaining all of his previous operable reports to get a better understanding of his unique condition… We also learned a lot about what types of approaches we could offer this patient based on his unique conditions, including his recurring hernia--and the fact that is was below the umbilicus.”

Dr. Fischer details the different surgical interventions used, including a mesh placement procedure in the patient’s abdomen and use of the "TAR" flap--which lessens the risk of post-operative wound complication, and the patient’s successful outcome.

Penn Medicine's Hernia Program provides evaluation, diagnosis and advanced surgical care from a dedicated team of physician leaders in the field of hernia repair.
